Meike Vernooij is Professor of Population Imaging and a neuroradiologist specializing in population-based imaging research. She obtained her medical degree (cum laude) and PhD (cum laude) from Erasmus University and also completed an MSc in Epidemiology at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences. This combination enables her to integrate clinical expertise in medical imaging with a strong background in epidemiology. She completed her radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

Since 2005, her research has focused on large-scale population imaging, with the aim of studying age-related brain changes and identifying early imaging markers of cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Her work integrates neuroimaging, epidemiology, image analysis/artificial intelligence (AI), and clinical neuroscience to improve understanding of disease processes, enhance early detection, and enable population-level risk stratification.

She is the author of more than 450 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of population research and neuroimaging and leads an active research group, supervising 10 PhD candidates and 2 postdoctoral researchers. Her work has received both national and international recognition.

In addition to her research activities, she practices as a clinical neuroradiologist with a focus on neurodegenerative disorders. She serves on the board of the Alzheimer Center Erasmus MC and is Chair of the Diagnostic Neuroradiology Committee of the European Society of Neuroradiology.
